Happy Feet, Happy Planner: Shoe Picks from the Event Frontlines

"A Meeting Planners International (MPI) community thread on footwear sparked widespread advice from event planners who spend long days on their feet. Vionic emerged as the most recommended brand across flats, loafers, sneakers, and ankle boots. Other favorites for dress-appropriate comfort include Dr. Scholl's Wexley Jane flats, Dansko Fawna and Colette styles, Cole Haan GrandPro sneakers, Wolf & Shepherd, Rothy's, and Aerosoles. Sneakers from Hoka, Salomon, Ryka, and Merrell are now considered acceptable with business attire. One travel manager recommended evaluating "cost per wear" rather than price alone, and DUOYANGJIASHA loafers were named as a budget-friendly option. For men, Cole Haan ZeroGrand and GrandPro, Ecco, and Clarks were top picks, with Allbirds or Hoka sneakers for site visits and load-in."

In the world of meetings and events, we talk a lot about AV specs, budget negotiations, and attendee engagement. But let’s be real – when you’re on your feet for 10, 12, or even 18 hours a day, nothing matters more than what’s on your feet.

That’s exactly why a recent thread in the Meeting Planners International (MPI) online community about shoes for planners struck such a chord. What began as a “silly” question, posed by a planner juggling high expectations and long hours in dress-appropriate outfits, sparked an avalanche of heartfelt, practical advice. Because when it comes to shoes, planners don’t mess around.

Here’s what your peers are actually wearing on the trade show floor, in the ballroom, and everywhere in between. Please note that we are not affiliated with any brand and the links to brand websites are not affiliate links.

1. The Undisputed Favorite: Vionic

If there were a shoe hall of fame for planners, Vionic would be first in line. Praised for its orthopedic-level arch support and versatility, Vionic received endorsements from nearly every corner of the thread. Flats, loafers, sneakers – even ankle boots – were all named as go-to options by planners who swear by them for long days on their feet.

Planner Tip: Vionic shoes are podiatrist-approved and offer a solid blend of comfort and polish. The Winny sneakers and ballet flats in particular got high marks for pairing well with both dresses and pantsuits.

2. Dress Shoes That Don’t Destroy You

Sometimes you need something a little more tailored, especially for formal conferences or client-facing roles. In those cases, planners recommended:

  • Dr. Scholl’s Wexley Jane Mary Jane Flats – Classic look, all-day wearability.
  • Dansko Fawna and Colette Styles – Known for superior support without sacrificing aesthetics. One planner noted they’re her “go-to” for long conference days.
  • Cole Haan GrandPro Sneakers & Dress Sneakers – Stylish enough for the boardroom, comfy enough for the show floor. Bonus: They come in an array of colors and styles.
  • Wolf & Shepherd – Perfect for those who want classic dress silhouettes with extra cushioning, Wolf & Shepherd marries Italian leather dress shoe aesthetics with sneaker technology for all‑day wear.
  • Rothy’s – Comfortable Flats Made from Recycled Materials. Now in a variety of styles beyond flats.
  • Aerosoles – Insole innovation makes this brand a tried and true pick. Their slogan is, “live fashionably, more comfortably” – We’re in!

3. Sneakers Are Officially In

Once considered taboo with business attire, sneakers have fully entered the planner uniform-especially when styled well. HokasSalomonRykas, and even Merrells made the list for those who prioritize comfort above all else.

Planner Insight: “Sneakers make me a better planner, and no one cares what’s on my feet,” said one seasoned pro.

4. The CPW Philosophy: Cost Per Wear

A seasoned travel manager and side-hustle shoe expert offered a smart perspective: Think beyond the price tag and consider “cost per wear.” A $150 pair that lasts through multiple events is often cheaper in the long run than a $75 pair that leaves you limping by lunch.

5. Budget Friendly Option

DUOYANGJIASHA Women’s Comfortable Loafers – A supportive and comfortable option with an affordable price, so you can have them in all the colors!

6. And What About the Guys? Solid Picks for Men on the Move

While the original MPI conversation centered on women’s footwear, we did some additional research to round things out – and the takeaway for men is consistent with everything planners value: versatility, support, and durability. Brands like Cole Haan (particularly the ZerøGrand and GrandPrø styles), Ecco, and Clarks consistently rise to the top for men who need a shoe that looks polished but feels more like a sneaker. These styles tend to offer lightweight construction, cushioned footbeds, and enough flexibility to handle long days. For less formal days like site visits, load-in, or teardown, many planners opt for supportive sneakers from brands like Allbirds or HOKA, often keeping a dressier pair on hand for client-facing moments.

Bottom Line: Style, Comfort, and Sanity Can Coexist

Your shoes shouldn’t be an afterthought – they’re your secret weapon for keeping energy high and burnout low. Whether you’re sprinting across a convention center or standing still for hours directing load-in, what’s on your feet directly affects how you perform.

So go ahead: invest in the pair that supports you as much as you support your attendees. Your feet, and your future self, will thank you.
